Read below and learn about how our schemes helped Tom progress from an Chef Apprentice to a Kitchen Team Leader
I started working for M&B in 2015 as a part-time glass collector whilst studying. In 2018, my current manager joined and a kitchen opening became available. I moved into the Kitchen full-time, and started an apprenticeship!
When I was told me about the apprenticeship, I was worried I would struggle – I hadn’t enjoyed school. However, with reassurance I jumped in. It was the best decision I have ever made. I started from the bottom, learning potwash, cleaning, prepping and supporting the wider team. I loved it!
I have learnt so many skills from my apprenticeship including time management, communication, food prep/cooking skills, health and safety and delegation. With encouragement and support, I gained English and maths qualifications. I found learning through relating it to my day-to-day job such as food ordering made the process easier.
I started on the Level 2 Food Production apprenticeship, which I completed in February 2020. I even achieved a Distinction, which I’m so proud of! After this, I completed the Team Leader qualification, which I completed in December 2021.
Through completing the team leader apprenticeship, I have progressed to Kitchen Team Leader. This position is second in command to the Kitchen Manager. I run the Kitchen on his days off: placing orders, working on rotas, ensuring all health and safety is met and that the team of 3 chefs underneath me are supported and developed.
I now have ambitions to run my own kitchen. Through my apprenticeship I’ve realised I can achieve anything I put my mind to!
