4 ways you can bring the wow factor in your new Assistant Manager job

Date posted: 12/04/2022

Assistant Managers at Mitchells and Butlers (M&B) are the bread and butter of hospitality. Guided by General Managers and Area Managers, and supported by a strong team, they help run our pubs, bars, and restaurants. Bringing a heap of experience to the table, Assistant Managers (AMs) lead their teams by example, staying cool as a cucumber within the hustle and bustle that comes with hospitality.

Wanting to make a good impression in a new job is a completely natural feeling. So, if you’ve just been promoted to AM, or you’re looking to potentially step up the career ladder, here are 4 ways you can kick off with a positive impact and bring the wow factor:

Show your passion

Working within the hospitality industry, and especially as an Assistant Manager, it all boils down to a key ingredient, passion. This doesn’t mean you have to be completely full of beans every single day – we’re all human! But it does mean that you get stuck into and show enthusiasm about the day-to-day tasks and motivate your team to achieve the best they can.

Our people work hard because they truly care about making a difference, and they want to provide unforgettable experiences for anyone who walks in the door. Being passionate and delivering a great service is what M&B is all about because we want our guests to keep coming back.

Introducing improved ways of working

Assistant Managers at M&B are responsible for delivering a high standard of service, running the restaurant floor, looking after guests, helping the General Manager meet targets, and drumming up morale so our teams can have fun along the way.

Introducing innovative ideas, or likewise encouraging teams to have the confidence to do so is a great way to make an impact in a new role, plus it enables you to become a great role model for future AMs. If you’ve got valuable experience from out of sector, consider transferring your skills and knowledge into your new role to introduce efficiencies and better ways of working.

Demonstrate the value you bring to the team

Assistant Managers are vital members of the team, and the best ones use their initiative to demonstrate the value they bring, continuously aiming to improve themselves, others and the day to day running of things.

Assistant Management isn’t as easy as pie, but our AMs enjoy the challenge because it helps them to develop and grow. If you’re just starting out in your Assistant Manager career, you can demonstrate your value by being a great communicator, a quick decision-maker, showing creativity and focusing on teamwork. Becky, who works as an Assistant Manager at The Kingfisher, one of our Premium Country Pubs, says her team laughs together, supports each other, and they all strive for greatness as one.

Be ready for anything

Hospitality is a lively environment and there is always something exciting going on. If you’ve made your way up to Assistant Manager in a pub, bar, or restaurant, you’ll already be a pro at plate spinning, not just because of your experience, but your attitude too.

AMs are adaptable; they have the confidence to think on their feet, and if the General Manager or Area Manager aren’t around, they’re running the show, so being ready for anything is an essential skill. At M&B, our AMs know what it takes to succeed , and they benefit from our award-winning training and development programmes which help them to become pros at finding solutions, not dwelling on challenges.
