We’ll get straight to the point - running a pub can be hard. Whether it’s a fast-paced environment, regulations, cracking customer service, or working on the grind, you’ll have a lot to keep you busy. But, who said hard work isn’t fun or rewarding? There’s a real sense of pride and accomplishment when it comes to what our pub General or Assistant Managers get up to in their day-to-day.

If you’re thinking about the next step in your hospitality career, it’s helpful to know the truth about running a pub at M&B. Spoiler - it’s filled with fun, inspiring your team, and a real wholesome work family. These things definitely make the challenges worth it.

Grab your favourite drink and join us as we uncover what you need to know to run a pub!

Can anyone run a pub?

While we really believe that anyone can run a pub, it does need a unique blend of skills and passion to do it well.

Qualities like leadership, adaptability and passion for the industry are a must, these can come with time and training. Other things like having a keen business sense and understanding regulations, are a little more technical.

Everything you need to run a pub can be learned in your career path with M&B, whether you’re starting out as bar staff or moving between our brands, we care about your growth and recognise hard work.

How hard is it to run a pub?

Running a pub is a wild ride that needs quick thinking, flexibility and plates of passion to keep your customers coming back for more. We’ve broken down four reasons why running a pub has its challenges (and its perks!).

The hustle and bustle of pub life

It’s no secret that at peak times, pubs are fast-paced. If you like jobs where you have to think on your feet, then running a pub could be for you.

You’ll act as a motivator - making sure the kitchen and front-of-house are all working in sync with seamless service at the heart of what they do. With top-notch leadership and team-building skills, and a can-do approach when it comes to multitasking, just think of yourself as the glue holding everyone together during busy times. Whether it's organising rotas, helping customers or showing off your business know-how in reports, there’s always something to get stuck into. And that’s not all! In the hustle and bustle of the pub, you’ll also be on the lookout for your team, making sure they rise through the ranks. Who doesn’t want to be responsible for kickstarting someone’s career?

Playing by the rules

With the Pubs Code, various certifications and licences, as well as health and safety training to keep in mind, running a pub involves juggling a mix of paperwork and permits, all while keeping the good times flowing for customers. But every regulation you learn and every report you file, is another stepping stone in your journey to mastering the art of pub management, shaping you into an adaptable industry leader!

Don’t worry though, you’ll always have support from the wider M&B team, from area managers to assistant managers, you’re never left alone when it comes to navigating the pub waters. We’re all in this together, toasting each success.

Customer care on tap

In a bustling pub environment, delivering exceptional customer service is a thrilling challenge. You’re responsible for bringing the smiles and the satisfaction.

From learning the diverse personalities of your regulars and playing a part in our guest's big life moments (whether that’s proposals, surprise parties or more!) to mastering the art of speedy and attentive service, every interaction is a chance to create memorable experiences that keep people coming back to get their glasses filled.

On the grind

Early morning prep and late-night closing can be familiar parts of the daily routine for pub managers.

It might seem demanding but at M&B, we know how important work-life balance and flexibility are, and we’re always looking for ways to improve.. And while your days might be long, take comfort in knowing that it’s with a cracking team where the banter never stops!

Now you know a bit about how to run a pub, what’s stopping you?

Pub managers might need to keep their eye on many things at once, but that’s fantastic for people who thrive in a busy environment. When you work with a great team, it’s always a recipe for success!

With over 13 brands and 1,600 businesses across the UK, it’s safe to say that there are plenty of opportunities for aspiring pub managers. If you’re passionate about people and love hospitality, we’re confident you’ll fit right in here. Check out our management vacancies today, we can’t wait to have you on board, managing a pub you can be proud of!
