Thinking about becoming a General Manager? Here’s what you’ll need to succeed

The path to becoming a General Manager is as rewarding as it is challenging, but success doesn’t happen by chance.

It takes a blend of skills, dedication, and the willingness to learn every step of the way. To inspire and guide you, we’ve gathered advice from Mitchells & Butlers’ Rising Stars—winners of our prestigious PRIDE awards—who have excelled in their first year as GMs.

Discover the skills they’ve honed to reach the top and how you can develop them too.

1. Seizing opportunities: adaptability and an open mind

Adaptability is one of the most important traits of a successful General Manager. Roy, GM at All Bar One New Oxford Street, emphasises the importance of being open to new experiences: "I had no kind of long-term goals of ending up as a GM. It kind of just happened by the by."

His willingness to relocate and embrace change helped him rise through the ranks.

Bonnie, GM at The Royal in Birmingham, and Sophie, GM at Old Cottage in Cardiff, also highlight how embracing unexpected opportunities can shape your career.

Bonnie transitioned from university to hospitality, saying, "I found when I was coming to work, I was enjoying it more... and then I just kind of worked my way up." Sophie discovered her love for teamwork and guest interaction, which set her on the path to success.

The ability to adapt and stay open to growth opportunities is key for aspiring GMs.

2. Leading with purpose: teamwork and leadership

Leadership isn’t just about managing—it’s about inspiring your team. Roy explains the importance of leading by example: "If you could see the GM or the management team setting that standard, then the rest of the team hopefully will follow on in the lead as well."

Sophie believes in consistent leadership: "You have to lead from the top... if you're not doing it, you can't expect other people to do it." She credits this mindset with fostering a high-performing team.

James, GM at Duck in the Pond, highlights the value of building a great team by hiring for attitude rather than just skills: "We've got the right team members who have the right attitudes." Developing a motivated, collaborative team starts with selecting individuals who share your vision.

3. Thriving under pressure: resilience and problem-solving

Resilience is an essential skill for a General Manager, and staying calm under pressure can make all the difference. Roy recalls an unexpected challenge on his first day as GM: "A bus drove into the building next door... we had to evacuate for about 5 hours."

His ability to think quickly and adapt set the tone for his leadership.

Bonnie also faced challenges after stepping into a newly refurbished business, explaining, "There was a lot to promote and sink my teeth into." Her proactive approach and flexibility helped her succeed in a dynamic environment.

As a General Manager, problem-solving and maintaining a steady approach will see you through even the toughest days.

4. Inspiring your team: communication and goal-setting

The ability to communicate effectively is a cornerstone of strong leadership. Aneta, GM at the Dog & Partridge Sizzling Pub, uses positive reinforcement to keep her team motivated: "I kept just telling them how great we were doing... they get so excited and want to do even better."

Sophie echoes this, emphasising how communication builds trust and resolves issues quickly: "We talk a lot and kind of sort things out straight away."

Setting clear goals and keeping your team aligned is crucial for achieving consistent results as a General Manager.

5. Striving for more: a passion for learning and growth

The best General Managers never stop learning and setting goals for their future.

Sophie is focused on completing her Level 4 Apprenticeship in Hospitality Management and aims to manage larger sites. "I’d like a bigger site... eventually move into being an area manager," she shares, showing how ambition fuels her growth.

Aneta, on the other hand, is focused on unlocking the potential of her new business: "Everything has potential... you just need to unlock it in the right way." She prioritises team development and preparing for future challenges.

A drive for continuous learning and improvement is a key trait for those looking to succeed in the role.
