Become a General Manager in 6 Months with M&B: take the leap today!

Date posted: 26/02/2025

Got a knack for leading teams to success and thinking about diving into the hospitality world? Or maybe you’ve already got some experience in hospitality management and are ready to level up your career. If that sounds like you, then the role of General Manager Designate (GMD) could be your perfect next step!

Here’s the exciting bit – the majority of our General Managers in Training are running their own business (yep, behind the bar!) within just 6 months!

So, you're probably wondering – what exactly does a General Manager Designate do, and how is it different from being a General Manager?

In this blog, we’re chatting with Emma, a GMD who swapped a 16-year career in another industry for a fresh challenge in hospitality. Let’s hear how she made the leap!

When did you start, and where are you now?

“I started with M&B in January 2023 and took over as a holding GM in April 2023. Since then, I’ve received hands-on training, including working with an accredited Kitchen Manager and shadowing experienced GMs.

Now, I’m managing my own business, using everything I’ve learned to ensure we deliver top-notch service to our guests while keeping the business running smoothly.”

Why did you decide to join hospitality?

“After 16 years in a different career, I was ready for something new. I’d always wanted to move into hospitality, so when I saw the GMD role, I jumped at the chance.

Despite lacking experience in the industry, I was encouraged to apply because M&B values passion and hard work. I wanted a job where I could bring my creativity and focus on guest experience every day.”

How’s the transition into hospitality management been?

“It’s been an exciting and challenging journey. There’s been a lot to learn, but the support from everyone at M&B has made it so much easier. My induction was fantastic, and I’ve received great guidance from my Retail Business Managers (RBM) and fellow GMs.

The training has been thorough, and I always know where to turn for help, which has made the transition smoother than I expected.”

How has your past experience helped?

“My previous roles helped me build strong team leadership and training skills, which are vital in hospitality. I also brought an understanding of business operations, from cost control to running efficient teams, which has been invaluable in managing a restaurant.”

What’s different from your old role?

“The best part of my new role is the direct impact I can have on guests’ experiences. Whether it’s getting positive reviews or turning a negative situation into a positive one, the job is incredibly rewarding.

The training and support I’ve received in hospitality is more thorough than anything I’ve seen in other industries, making the transition feel like a natural progression.

What does your role as General Manager involve?

My role as a GM includes everything from managing sales forecasting, costs, and stock levels, to ensuring health and safety standards are met.

I also oversee staff schedules, train my team, and handle guest feedback. I’m constantly learning, whether it’s through analyzing business performance or managing day-to-day operations.”

What’s the best thing about working for M&B?

The best thing about working here is the sense of community and support. Even though we work for different brands, I’ve formed strong connections with colleagues from my induction group.

My RBM is always just a phone call away, and I’ve felt supported by everyone, from head office to the learning and development teams. It feels like we’re all in this together, and that makes all the difference."
