Why we love working in Wales at M&B – and why St David’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate it

Date posted: 27/02/2025

As we approach St David’s Day, it’s the perfect time to celebrate all things that make working and living in Wales special, with our team who get to enjoy working and living in this beautiful country.

What is St David’s Day all about?

St David’s Day is all about celebrating Wales’ patron saint and everything that makes the country unique. People mark the day by wearing national emblems like a leek or a daffodil, and it's a time to embrace Welsh traditions, culture, and community spirit.

When is St David’s Day?

St David’s Day is celebrated on 1st March, the day it is thought that Saint David died in the year 589 AD.

A warm welcome – the Welsh way

One thing that stands out about working in Wales? The people. There’s a real sense of community, and that’s something our team experience every day.

Richard, a Manager at Suburban, appreciates the welcoming nature of the locals and the close-knit feel. Karl, an Area Manager at Harvester, agrees, saying his teams are the heart and soul of their businesses.

Mark, an Accredited Kitchen Manager at Vintage Inns, values the supportive environment where colleagues across M&B brands in Wales help each other out. “We have Wales cluster groups, which makes it really easy to communicate with all the local sites. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to use the discount!”

Stunning locations – from coast to city

Wales has it all – rolling countryside, beautiful coastlines, and vibrant cities. Our teams love working in such a picturesque setting.

Richard enjoys having the countryside on his doorstep, while Karl loves the variety of locations his businesses are in, “from West Wales to idyllic Welsh towns and even next to Swansea City Football Stadium.”

Laura, a Recruitment Partner, appreciates the balance between city, coastal, and rural areas. “We have some beautiful places to work, and I’m lucky enough to be mobile. One of my favourites is The Captain’s Wife – it overlooks Sully Island, and the building itself has such a warm, welcoming feel.”

A work culture like no other at M&B

Wales’ culture and heritage make it a fantastic place to work. Adam, a Deputy Manager at Vintage Inns, sums it up: “Wales just has a great vibe and a real community spirit.”

Jamie, a Kitchen Manager at Miller & Carter, finds the Welsh language and culture fascinating, saying it brings a unique energy to the workplace.

Hannah, a General Manager at Miller & Carter, loves the diversity of her team and guests, who all share a real passion for the brand.

Why work in Wales? Here’s what our teams say

Beyond the culture and scenery, working in Wales offers practical benefits too. Steven, a Kitchen Manager at Miller & Carter, loves how much people enjoy dining out, keeping the hospitality scene buzzing. He also appreciates the strong network between Welsh sites, where teams support one another.

Richard also points out the lower cost of living compared to England, making it easier to settle down and enjoy both work and life in Wales.
